MEDACTION : Policies for land use to combat desertification

Dr Mark Mulligan, King's College London

Introduction

A number of simulation models for desertification processes have been developed over the last 10 years of EU funded research. Many of these are reviewed in Mulligan (2003) A review of European Union funded research into modelling Mediterranean desertification. Advances in Environmental Monitoring and Modelling Special ISsue 4.MODULUS DSS to integrate biophysical models for hydrology, soil erosion, plant and crop growth, climate and weather and salinisation with socio-economic models for farner decision making, land use change and crop choice, irrigation, and water resources. The model runs at a number of nested timesteps down to a few minutes over land use and climate scnebarios spanning 30 years and at a spatial resolution of 1 Ha. Outputs of the model are summaried into policy relevant desertification indicators. The MEDACTION policy support system (PSS) built on the earlier

The project is summarised at RIKS
King's College London developed the biophysical models, based on the PATTERN and MODULUS models
